Say Goodbye to FOPO: The Fear of People’s Opinions
Oct 24, 2024Hey Lifeswervers!
Let’s talk about something we have all experienced but rarely admit: FOPO, or Fear of People’s Opinions. Yep, it’s that nagging voice that whispers, “What will they think?” when you want to try something bold, fun, or just a little out of the norm. Michael Gervais, PhD, coined this term, and let’s be real – FOPO is one of the biggest roadblocks, if not THE biggest on the path to living our most purpose-filled lives.
I have spent most of my life worrying about what others think – from family to friends to bosses and colleagues. I have made a conscious effort to stop worrying and trust my own guidance. Here’s the thing: other people’s opinions aren’t stopping you. You are. So, let’s get over that FOPO once and for all, shall we?
First off, remember that most people aren’t thinking about you as much as you think they are. We’re all busy living our own hero’s journey (yep, still heroes here!) and truthfully, everyone’s too wrapped up in their own lives to judge your every move. So, why let the imaginary opinions of others keep you from making that big career move, starting that business, wearing the bright yellow jacket with skulls on it, or dancing in your living room like nobody’s watching (because seriously, no one is)? The more you realize how little others are actually focusing on you, the easier it becomes to just do you.
Secondly – even though our family and friends may mean well when giving their opinions (insert judgements here 😊), they probably have no idea or experience in your business, career move, relationships, etc., so make sure you are getting advice from people that really KNOW what they are talking about.
Ready to break free from FOPO? Start small. Step one: pick one thing today that you’ve been holding back on because you’re worried about what others might think. Now, do it anyway! Wear that wild outfit, speak up in a meeting, or finally post that creative project online. Each time you take action, the weight of others' opinions gets lighter. You’ll soon realize that on the other side of FOPO is a whole lot of freedom, joy, and purpose.
So, let’s swerve right past fear and into a life where your opinion of yourself is the only one that matters. Bravery matters. Courage to be your true self matters.
You got this!
