Busy Does Not Equal Success: How to Find Meaning (and Energy) in Your Full Life
Mar 27, 2025Somewhere along the way, “busy” became a badge of honor—like the busier you are, the more important or successful you must be. But let’s be honest: running around like a caffeinated squirrel doesn’t automatically mean you’re living a meaningful life. True purpose isn’t about doing more—it’s about doing what matters. And ironically, when you focus on what matters, you actually create more energy instead of draining yourself dry.
I know, I still get caught up in this trap – even though I chose to leave the corporate race and now have my own business – time is money, blah blah blah. I feel guilty if I spend my time meditating, reading, going to the gym or enjoying nature. Then I remember – this is part of my definition of FREEDOM! I don’t need to be on everyone else’s schedule to feel worthy or needed. I choose the things that give ME energy – I choose me! And we should all do that – it gives us more energy to be grateful for every minute of every day we are alive. We then have more energy to spend with our loved ones.
So, how do we shift from busy to purposeful?
First, start your day with intention, not obligation. Before checking emails or diving into to-dos, take five minutes to ask: What’s the one thing today that will truly add meaning to my life? Whether it’s calling a friend, getting outside, or tackling that creative project you keep putting off, setting a daily intention gives your busyness direction—instead of just making you feel like you’re running on a hamster wheel.
Next, reframe your packed schedule as a privilege, not a punishment. A full calendar means you’re alive, connected, and needed. Instead of groaning about back-to-back meetings or endless errands, try swapping “I have to” with “I get to.” Suddenly, “I have to make dinner” becomes “I get to nourish myself.” “I have to work” turns into “I get to make an impact.” Your mindset determines your energy— so choose gratitude, and watch your exhaustion shift.
And if your energy is still dipping? Move your body, nourish it well, and create micro-moments of rest. Stretch for 30 seconds between calls. Blast your favorite song while folding laundry. Eat real food that fuels you, not just what’s convenient. Purposeful living isn’t about slowing down or speeding up—it’s about moving through life with awareness and joy.
