Breaking Down the Walls: How to Crush Your Limiting Beliefs and Ignite What is Possible

career health/wellness Nov 13, 2024

Alright, Lifeswervers - let’s talk about those sneaky little “limiting beliefs” and “blocks” that keep us stuck in a comfort zone the size of a thimble. These are the thoughts that pop up right when we’re ready to go big or achieve that ultimate goal – the “you’re too old,” “it’s too late,” or the infamous “who do you think you are?” These limiting beliefs are like bad Wi-Fi signals, blocking us from the full potential energy that is streaming all around us! But here’s the fun part: they’re totally crushable. And the first step? Start seeing them for what they really are – flimsy walls just waiting for a good sledgehammer swing.

What do these blocks look like? They can be disguised as the pesky resistance to eat real food or move your body today. They can look like not reaching out to that business connection or charging what you are REALLY worth or sending that text or applying for that job. Sometimes it can look like just stepping outside of your front door. I have been there at all the places, in many scenarios – just when I get to the “almost” mountain top, I start sliding down the mountain. What I have learned is it’s the consistent practice of resilience – being curious about why you start to lose belief in yourself or why you are not worthy and tell yourself a different story. This is a consistent journey, with many new peaks and valleys. So get up, wipe the dirt of your hands and keep climbing – the scenery is unbelievable!

Need a little inspiration to kick down these walls? Check out The Power of Believing That You Can Improve by Carol Dweck. In her TED Talk, she explains how embracing a “growth mindset” – basically believing that you can develop, evolve, and get better – is what helps us transform, even when things feel impossible. Dweck’s message is simple but powerful: these walls we face are largely built by us and can be brought down with a solid dose of curiosity and commitment to something new. If we believe we’re capable of more, we’re halfway to making it happen.

So, ready to knock down your limiting beliefs?

Try these three hacks:

1) Start a daily “belief audit.” Write down every reason you think you can’t achieve a goal and counter each one with why you can (and maybe throw in a little sass for good measure).

2) Visualize your best-case scenario in full color – the details, the emotions, the wins – and return to that image every time doubts creep in.

3) Set one gutsy goal each week that inches you past your comfort zone. Whether it’s pitching an idea, trying a new workout, or asking for feedback, each step chips away at the walls you’re ready to bust down.

It’s time to let go of those old stories and step boldly into the life you’re ready to create!
